Without spoilers i cant say much more except Altair stole the ending. Although this plot is one we see a lot, the action and the fight scenes and the banter between characters from ACT 2 on more than make up for a cliche plot. ( much like the Fold in Shadow and Bone) Zafira was the only one able to go into the Arz and come out alive, so it remains she has to be the one to set out on this quest.

The plot, it is a quest basically for the Holy Grail of magic that will free the world from the ARZ a growing darkness of forest taking over. I loved the characters: there are secrets and character building throughout the book An editor should have found a way to skip to the good part, weed out the slowwwwww first act, because the cliffhanger ending was everything. Honestly the reader could skip the entire Act I and not miss anything important. Zafira is possibly now my fave female character of all time, she out shone Altair who easily could have been Aladin in the Disney movie and Nasir the Prince of Death Lord of Shadows. A girl who is fearless to stand up to the patriarchy, who wields any weapon with skill. Books with a strong female protagonist, who are representing a Muslim Middle Eastern descent.

Stories that blend ancient fairy tales of Jinn, Ifrit, and Arabian nights. There are not enough books like We Hunt The Flame. But an ancient evil stirs as their journey unfolds-and the prize they seek may pose a threat greater than either can imagine. When Zafira embarks on a quest to uncover a lost artifact that can restore magic to her suffering world and stop the Arz, Nasir is sent by the sultan on a similar mission: retrieve the artifact and kill the Hunter. War is brewing, and the Arz sweeps closer with each passing day, engulfing the land in shadow. Both Zafira and Nasir are legends in the kingdom of Arawiya-but neither wants to be. If Zafira was exposed as a girl, all of her achievements would be rejected if Nasir displayed his compassion, his father would punish him in the most brutal of ways. Nasir is the Prince of Death, assassinating those foolish enough to defy his autocratic father, the sultan. Zafira is the Hunter, disguising herself as a man when she braves the cursed forest of the Arz to feed her people. Set in a richly detailed world inspired by ancient Arabia, Hafsah Faizal's We Hunt the Flame -first in the Sands of Arawiya duology-is a gripping debut of discovery, conquering fear, and taking identity into your own hands.
